Moving Tips to Help Keep Your Life Organized During a Big Move

Moving can be stressful. However, there are ways to make it easier and to stay organized. Whether you are moving to corporate housing for your next extended business trip, or you are going to be living in temporary housing while you are between homes, our moving tips will help you to keep your life organized.

Prepare for your move

Cut back on the clutter

Donate or sell items you don’t want or need. Especially if you are in between houses. Why bring a bunch of clutter if you aren’t going to want it in your new home? Go ahead and donate or sell things you don’t want to bring to your new home, so that you don’t have to worry about finding a place for them if you are just going to get rid of them later.

Use up the food in your kitchen

2-3 weeks before your move, plan your meals to use frozen food and soon expiring or open items you have around the kitchen. Donate food items you haven’t opened yet to your local food pantry. If you have a lot of random ingredients, you can make a fun game out of it, Chopped-style.

Set up mail forwarding services

Set up forwarding services for mail, etc. for the duration of your stay. Also be  sure to let your friends and loved ones know that you will have a different address for a while.

Make moving clothes easy

Clothes can take up a lot of space and time when moving. A simple hack is to put your clothes, still on the hangers,  inside of trash bags to make moving them easy. The best way to do this is to keep the hangers together and cut a hole through the bag for the tops of the hangers to go through, like a garment bag. Then when you are in your new home, hang them up, cut off the trash bags, and your clothes are unpacked.

Make it easy to find the hardware for furniture

With Executive Lodging properties, you ewon’t need any furniture. However, if you still want to bring some of your favorite pieces, store all screws and hardware in a plastic bag to make sure that you don’t lose them. Then attach it to the piece of furniture so that you know what goes with what.

Find boxes easily

When packing boxes, write the content of each box on the outside with a marker, as well as what room it goes in. Not only will this make you more organized, you will be able to quickly find items you need. Make sure to write this on the sides of the boxes, so you can easily spot the writing.

Pack an overnight bag

Pack an overnight bag with the essentials, so you aren’t having to go through boxes and boxes to find the things you need. This should include necessary toiletries, a change of clothes, phone charger, your laptop, etc.

Protect your toiletries from opening

No one wants your toiletry bottles to open mid-move and get your shampoo and other liquids all over the rest of your belongings. A simple way to prevent this is to take the lid off, cover the opening with saran wrap, then put the top back on. This will prevent your toiletries from opening and leaking all over your things during the move.

Make the most of your new space

Get organized

Getting organized will help prevent you from feeling overwhelmed when moving into a  new place. Especially with moving into a furnished apartment, it will help you to feel less stressed if you know where everything is. Go through the cabinets, drawers, and closets, and organize it in a way that will make it feel like home to you.

Personal touches

Placing personal touches around corporate housing will make it feel more like home. Put your favorite throw blanket over the back of the couch. Bring your favorite coffee mug from home. A few framed photos of your family will help to make you feel more at home in your furnished apartment, especially if you are away from your family.

Bring your pet

Sometimes, bringing a pet with you can help you to feel at home. Your pet is a member of your family, and what is better than having family with you while you are away from home? Most of our properties allow you to have a pet. Just make sure to mention it when setting up your housing request.
