5 Tips for Decorating Your Apartment Patio or Balcony

Even if you are in an apartment only temporarily, you want it to feel like home. Decorating your patio or balcony can do just that. With a few personal touches, your patio will be cozy, inviting, and reflective of your personal style. Here are some tips to make the most out of your small space.

Some well placed flowers can make your apartment’s patio or balcony your own personal oasis. To save space, install flower boxes or shelving on the railing. That way you can have the look and feel of a garden without taking up a lot of room. Some other great options are utilizing hanging baskets or even a trellis for climbing plants. Not only will flowers make your patio or balcony beautiful, it will give it an intoxicating floral scent.

Rustic DIY Sofa

Create your own rustic sofa by placing cushions on top of a crate or chest. This can also double as storage in the tight space. Make the look your own by playing with different sizes, colors, and textures of pillows. A light blanket will make your DIY sofa extra cozy on chilly nights, perfect for curling up on with a glass of wine.

Bistro Set

Enjoy fresh air with your morning coffee with a nice bistro set. A small table with two chairs won’t take up much room on your balcony, and you can have a nice spot to enjoy view. There are many options to choose from, including coffee house style, wrought iron, and more. Some tables are even collapsible, giving you even more room to work with. Something to consider is if your bistro set will be exposed to rain. If this is the case, make sure it is waterproof.

Potted Bamboo

Bamboo can transform your balcony or patio into your own little paradise. Potted bamboo doesn’t take up a lot of room but can shield your patio from the street or from looking directly into your neighbor’s balcony window. Make sure to buy clumping bamboo, as other varieties can easily grow out of control. Bamboo can happily grow in containers and will typically grow pretty quickly. If space is an issue, you can always plant it in a flower box on your railing. Potted bamboo can provide you with privacy, shade, and some extra oxygen, as well as something pretty to look at.

Cozy Outdoor Nook

If your balcony is on the smaller side, an idea is to fit a cushion to your patio space to create a cozy little outdoor nook. Line the edges with cushy pillows to make it extra comfortable, leaving you with a great place to curl up and relax outside. Install hanging lights so you have adequate lighting for nighttime use. Some flower boxes on the railing will complete the look of your little nook, making it your own.

With the right decor, even the smallest balcony can look inviting and picturesque. These are just a few of the many things you can do to make the most out of your space. The key is being creative and using the space to your advantage.
